Monica Coro

What could be better than setting your own record in your homeland? That's exactly what Monica Coro did at the June 2012 FINA World Masters Championships in Riccione, Italy. The Italian breaststroke star bettered her own 50-54 age group Masters world record in the 50 (34.18) and 100 (1:15.50) LC breaststroke.

In the 100 breast, slightly faster wasn't good enough For Coro: her new world record was more than two seconds faster than her previous 1:17:84, a time she clocked only months ago before.

"That was my goal when I came here," she told the media at the meet. "I'm very satisfied. I competed in three Masters World Championships, but this must be the (best) because I'm in Italy and because I've made it!"

Coro has been untouchable in her age group for several years in a number of breaststroke events. She holds word records in the SC 50 (33.96) and 100 (1:15.76)  breast, and claims all of the women's long course 50-54 breaststroke Master world records - from the 50 to the 200 (2:50.92).

Coro is so untouchable that when she clocked her 1:15.50 100 breast world record, she finished a full seven seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Talk about racing yourself!

¿Qué podría ser mejor que establecer un registro mundial en tu tierra natal?

Eso es exactamente lo que Mónica Coro hizo en junio del 2012 en el decimo cuarto Campeonato Mundial FINA Master en Riccione, Italia. En los 50-54 años, la estrella italiana en brazada de pecho supero su propia marca mundial en los 50m (34.18) y 100m (1:15.50) curso largo en brazada de pecho.   

          En los 100m pecho, aunque ligeramente más rápida, no resulto suficientemente bueno para Coro: su nuevo registro mundial fue dos segundos más rápido que el anterior 1:17.84, un tiempo que ella registro solo meses antes.     

          “Esa fue mi meta cuando llegue aquí.” Comento a la prensa. “Estoy satisfecha. Competí en tres Campeonatos Mundiales Master. Pero este tiene que ser el mejor porque estoy en Italia y ¡porque lo logre!”

         Coro ha sido intocable en su categoría por varios años en un número de eventos de brazada de pecho. Ella posee el registro mundial en curso corto 50m (33.96) y 100m (1:15.76) pecho, y ostenta todos los Registros Mundiales Master de mujeres en cursos largos 50-54 en brazada de pecho – de 50 a 200 (2:50.92).

         Coro es tan intocable que cuando registro su marca mundial de 1:15.50 en 100m pecho, finalizo con siete segundos por delante del segundo clasificado. ¡Hablando de competir contra ti mismo!
